The Evolution of Private Credit

Private credit emerged following the Global Financial Crisis as banks retreated from corporate lending, creating a structural funding gap.

Since then, it has evolved through three distinct phases:

  • Middle-market lending (2010-2016)
  • Institutionalisation (2016-2021)
  • Mass market expansion (2021-present)

Today, it represents a significant and growing part of the global credit ecosystem, with increasing scale, participation and complexity.
